Privacy Policy
Cubed News (“we”, “us”, “our”) operates the website at cubednews.com. We are an independent general-news publication, and we take the privacy of our readers seriously. This Privacy Policy explains what personal data we collect, why we collect it, how we use and share it, and the rights you have over it. It applies to everyone who visits our website, subscribes to our newsletter, or otherwise contacts us.
We have written this policy to comply with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the United Kingdom GDPR, and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA). Wherever you are in the world, we apply the same baseline standard of care to your information.
What Data We Collect
We collect only what we need to publish journalism, operate the site, and communicate with the people who ask to hear from us. Specifically:
- Analytics data. When you visit the site, our analytics provider records technical and usage information such as your approximate location (derived from your IP address), device and browser type, the pages you view, referring links, and how long you stay. Where our configuration allows, IP addresses are anonymised or truncated before storage.
- Newsletter email address. If you choose to subscribe to a Cubed News newsletter, we collect the email address you provide and a record of your consent. We do not require any other personal detail to subscribe.
- Correspondence. If you email us, submit a correction, pitch a story, or contact us through a form, we keep the message and your contact details so we can respond and maintain a record.
We do not knowingly collect data from children, and we do not ask readers to create accounts or provide sensitive personal information in order to read our coverage.
Why We Use It and Our Legal Basis
We process your data to deliver and improve the website, to understand which stories readers find valuable, to send newsletters you have requested, to respond to your messages, to keep the site secure, and to comply with our legal obligations. Under the GDPR, our lawful bases are your consent (for the newsletter and for non-essential cookies), our legitimate interests (in running a secure, well-functioning publication and understanding our audience in aggregate), and legal obligation where applicable. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not engage in “sharing” of personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising as those terms are defined under the CCPA/CPRA.
Cookies and Tracking
We use cookies and similar technologies to make the site work, to measure traffic, and — where you consent — to support advertising. You can control these through our consent banner and your browser settings. Full detail, including the categories of cookies and how to manage them, is set out in our Cookie Policy.
Third Parties We Share Data With
We share limited data with service providers who help us operate, and only for that purpose. These include our analytics provider, our email-newsletter platform, our hosting and content-delivery infrastructure, and, where advertising runs on the site, advertising partners who may set cookies and process limited data to serve and measure ads. Each is bound by its own terms and applicable data-protection law, and we ask our providers to act only on our instructions. We may also disclose data where we are legally required to do so, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our readers, staff, and the publication.
Some of these providers may process data outside your home country, including outside the European Economic Area. Where that happens, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses or an equivalent recognised mechanism.
How Long We Keep It
We retain personal data only for as long as we need it for the purpose it was collected, after which it is deleted or anonymised. Newsletter data is kept until you unsubscribe. Aggregate analytics may be retained for longer because it no longer identifies you. Correspondence is kept for as long as is reasonable to maintain a record of the matter it concerns.
Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you have rights over your personal data. Under the GDPR these include the right to access the data we hold about you, to have it corrected, to request its deletion, to restrict or object to processing, and to data portability. Under the CCPA/CPRA, California residents have the right to know what we collect, to request deletion, to correct inaccurate information, and to be free from discrimination for exercising those rights. You can withdraw consent — for example, to the newsletter or to non-essential cookies — at any time.
To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@cubednews.com. We will respond within the timeframe the applicable law requires. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority if you believe we have handled your data improperly.
Changes and Contact
We may update this policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or the law. When we make material changes, we will note them on this page. For any question about privacy, your data, or this policy, contact us at privacy@cubednews.com or write to Cubed News, 1222 Clarence St, Sydney, Australia.
